The buying power of the group ensures the best deals available for farm inputs. Where the Jigsaw Group has a big advantage over other buying groups is that all products are researched and evaluated for their quality.

Compound feed manufacturers are asked to quote for a prescribed specification on around 8 dairy diets with differing levels of energy and protein, plus young stock feeds, beef feeds and protein pellets. All quotes are evaluated. A decision is made on who will supply the group based on the quality of the feed linked to the price given. Prices are fixed from a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 12 months.

Savings of £20-£30/tonne for a comparable feed are commonplace.

During the contract, a sample of feed is taken from a member's farm each month and analysed by an independent laboratory. This ensures the products are up to standard throughout the contract.

At the end of a contract period, the group business is put out to tender again.

Many hours have been spent researching and evaluating other products. This is ongoing as new products enter the market.
